Why network choice really matters?

A 2009 survey found that 38.5 per cent of the UK workforce relies on a mobile as its main business phone. And with the vast majority of users relying on 3G for email and internet access too, network performance has a huge bearing on the way people work.

A recent study also underlined a growing trend in the way we use mobile technology. It’s no longer just about communicating outside and on the move – it’s about having a device that works wherever we are, inside and out. A tool that lets us move seamlessly between our offices, cars and homes without changing the way people contact us or worrying about missed calls and emails.

As the functionality of mobile devices grows and ultra-portable netbooks proliferate, our reliance on office-bound technology falls. Why switch to a fixed line and desktop when you can access voice, internet and emails using a lightweight device that starts up in seconds? And why give your customers two numbers to call, when your mobile phone is always with you?

At the same time, financial, environmental and service-led pressures are increasing the popularity of flexible working. Getting the right communications technology in place is paramount – and a fast, reliable network lies at the core.

So, how much does coverage impact on customer experience?

A reliable internet connection is just as crucial. Research conducted by the Office forVodafone Network Coverage National Statistics in 2008 found that businesses with 250-299 employees closed 51 per cent of sales over the internet. In the same year, internet sales for the wholesale, retail, catering and travel sector totalled £106.6 billion. Given that 38% of London customers wait just one hour for a reply to a business email enquiry before looking elsewhere, a consistent connection is a must-have business tool.

And then there’s the vast array of industries – from IT to healthcare – with staff who fulfil vital roles by working ‘on call’ from home. For these people, every task begins with an email or a phone conversation.

Businesses that have a dependable mobile network are not only better placed to secure new business, but they can also explore fresh ways of working that boost productivity and simplify operations. Flexible working is on the rise in the UK. More and more often, business decisions have to be made across multiple time zones. Public sector organisations need to bring staff closer to the community while cutting the cost and environmental impact of travel. Global organisations need to accommodate the needs of staff that travel widely, making sure they stay close to customers. In these scenarios, a fixed line and desktop computer just won’t do. And neither will a smartphone running on an unreliable network.

Vodafone are always improving their network, which is one of the reasons why they were named UK's Best Network at the Mobile News Awards and the Mobile Industry Awards 2010 and voted fastest mobile network in a 2010 study conducted by O2.

Continual investment in both 2G and 3G networks will see Vodafone again increase the number of base stations nationwide during 2010/2011.

Vodafone 3G Network

Vodafone is committed to providing the best data experience for customers.  Vodafone are continually investing in their 3G network to support the increased numbers of data users, the significant increase in data volumes our customers are using and the demand for speed when using data.

In our 3G network we are increasing the HSPA (7.2Mbps & 14.4Mbps) and HSPA+ (21.6Mbps & 28.8Mbps) capability to ensure customers have the ultimate data experience.  Higher speed capability is deployed in areas with high numbers of users and the greatest volume of data being downloaded providing good, consistent average download speeds to all users nationwide.

Vodafone were the first UK mobile operator to upgrade their 3G network with this level of capability demonstrating commitment to their customers data experience.

The other good news is that these upgrades don't mean Vodafone customers will need to buy new devices. Over 80% of all Vodafone data cards/dongles and 3G handsets can take advantage of the improvements to their 3G network.
