Get SBC to dispose of your old mobile phone
Here at SBC we take our responsibility for the environment very seriously. Mobile phone recycling may sound like a
simple act but the process significantly helps towards reducing not only landfill but also your carbon footprint, paving the way for a sustainable environment.
So why should you recycle your mobile Phone? How do you benefit? Is it really good for the environment?
Simply throwing out unwanted or old mobile phones is harmful for the environment as there is the potential for considerable toxic contamination caused by these substances leaking into the surrounding soil.
Research suggests that there are over 20 million potentially toxic redundant mobile phones in the UK, making up one to two percent of electronic waste. People in the UK change their phone on average every 12 months. As more and more new phones come on the market this number is set to grow.
What is the WEE DIRECTIVE EUROPEAN LAW?
The WEEE directive stands for ''Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment''.WEEE Directive is a European law designed to encourage and regulate the collection, reuse, recycling and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment.
The regulations came into force on 1st July 2007, which now means all mobile phones are fully classed as WEEE and need to be reused and recycled in a responsible and compliant way.
Under the WEEE Directive, all shops selling electrical products covered by the Weee Directive must help their customers to recycle old mobile phones for free. SBC fully encourage and premote recycling of old mobile phones and the first port of call is reuse where applicable.
Did you know? Much of the UK's WEEE ends up in landfill, where the lead and other toxins it contains can cause soil and water contamination. This can have a harmful effect on natural habitat, wildlife and also human health.
